Beware of Adobe's new subscription pricing

Beware of Adobe's new subscription pricing
The newly released Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 has a smattering of new features, including boosted support for mobile devices and HTML5. But buried in the announcement is a new pricing model that is akin to a siren's song: enticing, but best avoided.
The suite -- as well as its individual components -- can be had via a typical software license or a monthly subscription. Although the monthly subscription may look like a good deal, some quick calculations show otherwise.
Take Photoshop, for example. The most popular part of Creative Suite, it costs $699 as a regular license purchase. That seems like an expensive piece of software, especially next to the $35-per-month subscription price. So why plunk down $700 when you could just kick Adobe a modest $35 each month? Well, if you plan on using the software for two or more years (and who doesn't?), the $699 license is the cheaper option.
At $35 per month, subscription pricing costs $420 a year; for the first year of use, the license is more expensive than 12 months of subscription use. However, after two years, subscription users will have paid $840, whereas license users will still have paid $699. And on it goes -- $1,260 for three years, $1,680 for four years. The unfavorable ratios for the subscription plans work out similarly for its other products and suites.
The curveball is that Adobe issues a major upgrade about every 24 months, and then offers the upgrade at a discount (the most recent figures tab the upgrade price at $199). But even with that cost factored in for the third and fourth years of use, licensing comes out to be the cheaper option: $1,260 (third year) and $1,680 (fourth year) for subscription, $898 ($699 + $199) for licensing -- and that's assuming users even opt for the upgrade.
Another curveball: Adobe says it will issue "midcycle" upgrades for some products, meaning a new update a year after the major version update. It's yet one more opportunity to pay Adobe a license fee, making a 24-month upgrade cycle into a 12-month one -- for some of the products some of the time.
Check out InDesign -- if you bought InDesign CS 5.0 and paid the $699 full license two years ago, then buy the $119 CS 5.5 update this year and the CS 6.0 license a year from now for presumably another $119, that's $937. If you bought the CS 5.0 version, skip the minor new features in the CS 5.5 update, and get the CS 6.0 upgrade a year from now (presumably for $199), that's $898. The subscription for the same four years of usage between 5.0 and 6.5 would cost $1,440 via subsription.
In other words, paying a license update every year to always have the latest version is still cheaper than subscribing.
If you only need the software for a short while, then clearly subscription pricing is the way to go. But if you want to actually keep the software and use it over a longer term, then do your wallet a favor and buy the license.

Xerox Helps Print Providers Capture New Business in Billion Dollar Photo Applications Market

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new ink from Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will make it easier for print providers to produce high-revenue, offset-quality photo applications.
Xerox’s new matte dry ink is designed for a range of print jobs, including the photo products consumers are demanding. According to InfoTrends, photo applications such as books, greeting cards and calendars are projected to be a $2.2 billion market by 2014.
The ink is available on the Xerox iGen4® EXP PDF file, the latest model built on the award-winning Xerox iGen4 platform.
“Print providers can push the boundaries of digital production with this ink,” said Eric Armour, president, Graphic Communications Business Group, Xerox Corporation. “By adding matte dry ink to the Xerox iGen4 EXP they receive the advantages of high-volume digital printing – such as personalization and automation – as well as image quality that’s virtually indistinguishable from offset.”
The ink provides a consistent and uniform appearance across highlights, mid-tones and shadows – critical for ink-heavy applications such as marketing collateral, collages in photo books and full-page photographs for calendars and greeting cards. It also produces authentic skin tones and natural colors while maintaining fine detail in background images.
Swiss-based Ifolor AG uses Xerox’s matte dry ink for digital photos and greeting cards, as well as specialty items including posters, photo books, writing pads and calendars. “We demand quality. With the iGen4 EXP’s productivity, combined with the new ink, we print high-volume, color-rich applications in minutes,” said Markus Wirth, chief executive officer, Ifolor AG.
The iGen4 EXP offers more image area than competitive devices – translating to more sellable output and increased profits. The solution leverages Xerox FreeFlow® Digital Workflow Collection, along with software and finishing options from Xerox business partners, to streamline and synchronize the production process as needed.
Availability
The matte dry ink option is available immediately with new iGen4 EXP sales.

Adobe Welcomes PHP Developers with New Flash Builder Support

Adobe and Zend Technologies team up to deliver integration between PHP and Adobe’s Flash Builder for mobile app development across, Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS.

Bringing PHP developers closer to the Flash Platform, Adobe Systems and Zend Technologies, the PHP company, announced Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP software, a new integrated product helping PHP developers create rich Internet applications for mobile, Web and desktop. Adobe officials said that for the first time developers now have the benefit of an integrated development environment (IDE) that combines the capabilities of Flash Builder and Zend Studio for rapidly creating Flex and PHP applications. And with a single code base, developers can deliver applications for Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS while sharing code from Web applications, reducing the time and cost of application creation and maintenance.
“With the rapid growth of PHP adoption in the enterprise, delivering superior user experiences for Web, mobile and desktop PHP applications has become critical for today’s developers,” said Ed Rowe, vice president of development tooling at Adobe, in a statement. “The integration of Zend Studio 8 with Flash Builder 4.5 brings together leading technologies for server-side and client-side development, enabling developers to efficiently and cost-effectively create incredible applications across desktops, Web and mobile platforms, including Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS.”
This April 11 news complements the same-day release of Flash Builder 4.5, Flex 4.5 and the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 family, further demonstrating the strategic alliance between Adobe and Zend and underscoring the companies’ strong commitment to the developer and designer community.
“Building mobile applications is top of mind for many of our enterprise customers,” said Andi Gutmans, CEO at Zend. “The long-standing partnership between Zend and Adobe continues to produce exciting results, this time with Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP, which brings together best-of-breed technologies for rapid and seamless development of mobile applications based on PHP, Flash technology and Flex. With this new solution, customers can deliver high-quality applications faster to the market.”
Al Hilwa, an analyst with IDC, said: “Adobe has found that the combination of Flash/Flex at the front end and PHP at the back end is the single most popular combination outside of probably HTML and PHP, so they teamed up with Zend and created some nifty integration between the two Eclipse-based IDEs: Flash Builder and Zend Studio. The combination is a bargain for folks who have to use both of these premium tools, but also productivity win.”
Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP is an Eclipse-based tool for rapidly building expressive mobile, Web and desktop applications using PHP, ActionScript and the open-source Flex Framework. Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP includes an integrated copy of Zend Studio 8, enabling developers to code and debug within a single environment, for the delivery of scalable, high-performance and secure PHP-based mobile applications on Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS. Using these newly integrated tools, developers will find it easier to differentiate their PHP applications by providing superior user experiences, Adobe officials said.
New features in Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP integrated with Zend Studio 8 include:
  • Combined Installer: Get the development process up and running quickly with seamless installation of the integrated products within Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP.
  • Flex and PHP Project Wizards: Use a single UI framework; create Flex and PHP projects for desktop and mobile devices with a streamlined, optimal workflow.
  • Data Centric Development Wizard for PHP: Connect to PHP services and generate ActionScript value objects in fewer steps.
  • Integrated Debugging: Initiate both Flex and PHP debug sessions simultaneously, set breakpoints in Flex/ActionScript and PHP and accelerate through both front-end and back-end code in the same debugging session.
The launch of Creative Suite 5.5 comes at a time when mobile devices are exploding in terms of sales and capabilities, fundamentally changing the way content and applications are developed and consumed. With the launch of Adobe Flash Builder 4.5—available stand-alone or as part of Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium—and the Flex 4.5 framework, developers can easily develop and deploy mobile applications to more than 200 million Android, BlackBerry PlayBook and iOS devices by the end of 2011, Adobe said.
Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP is scheduled to ship within 30 days, with availability through both Adobe and Zend’s authorized resellers, online stores and direct sales teams. Estimated street prices for Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP Premium and Flash Builder for PHP Standard editions are expected to be $799 and $399, respectively. Adobe will offer upgrade pricing from Flash Builder 3 or 4. Zend will offer upgrade pricing from Zend Studio.

Photoshop features brought to iPad – New Software Development Kit launched

Photoshop on Apple iPad? Not quite, but Adobe are bringing some goodies to allow developers to use the tablet in the Photoshop creative process.
Adobe has launched a Software Development Kit for Photoshop CS5, setting up its presence in the ever-growing tablet market and letting developers enhance their apps using Photoshop and on the flipside – create items on the tablet for use in Photoshop.
The official word says “Adobe is extending the creative process beyond the desktop by helping integrate tablet devices into creative workflows.”
In addition to a new scripting engine and SDK for Photoshop, Adobe has announced 3 additional iPad apps for developers to get the fullest out of the creative process from Photoshop to tablet, and tablet to Photoshop.
Adobe Colour Lab allows iPad users to create custom colours and send them back to the desktop via WiFi for use in Photoshop CS5.
Similarly Adobe Eazel will let developers draw using the convenience of the tablet surface and import the creation directly into the PC-based software.
Thirdly Adobe Nav allows the developer to create custom controls to work in unison with Photoshop, making the tablet less of a stand-alone gadget but an actual tool in the Photoshop creative experience.
Sadly, Adobe isn’t bringing the full creative suite over to the iPad – there’s simply not the power in a little tablet – but they are certainly providing a lot of potential to create with it. The Software Development Kit named “Photoshop Touch” is available now from the official Adobe Photoshop website – with the Colour Lab, Eazel and Nav apps to follow soon.
