Sprint Adds a Touch of Green to Android with Samsung Replenish

In San Francisco, California at the Climate One discussion, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse unveiled Sprint’s latest eco-friendly efforts in the form of the Samsung Replenish, an eco-conscious Android smartphone. While the phone is touted as environmentally friendly, it doesn’t skimp on specs and the Samsung Replenish should be able to take on messaging devices with a front-facing keyboard, such as the Droid Pro from Motorola, also an Android smartphone, and RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones.
The Replenish will be available beginning May 8th for just $50 on a two-year service agreement. The device will be compatible with Sprint ID, which are bundled apps, wallpapers, ringtones, and other pre-selected software components that help users customize and personalize their devices in a simple click. Some features of the Replenish include:

• Touch QWERTY bar phone with 2.8-inch QVGA main display
• Android 2.2, Froyo, with access to more than 150,000 apps on the Android Market
• Special access to Sprint ID Pack, including Green ID pack
• Solar door charging accessory (sold separately)
• 2MP camera and camcorder – upload, share and store pictures with Photobucket, Facebook^®, MySpace^® and upload video to YouTube™
• Wi-Fi^® and GPS capable
• MicroSD card slot that supports up to a 32GB memory card
• Three color options – Onyx Black, Arctic Blue and Raspberry Pink (in June)

The Replenish features a case made of 80% recyclable materials. Additionally, there’s an optional back battery cover that houses a solar power panel for charging while on the go.
At the announcement, Sprint is boasting about its status as the sixth most green company in America, and the company really is putting its money where its mouth is. In addition to making America’s first green and eco-conscious smartphone, Dan Hesse also announced that Sprint will be helping to make the Android-powered phone more affordable and attractive to consumers. With the Replenish, Sprint will be offering customers a $10 per month discount on their monthly rate plans to new and existing customers. Additionally, the Replenish will feature the following environmentally-friendly features:

• Reduced environmentally sensitive materials (RoHS compliant⁶, free of intentionally added polyvinyl chloride (PVC), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), phthalates and beryllium)
• Energy efficient, with a charger that meets the EC Code of Conduct on Energy Efficiency of External Power Supplies, Version 4, as well as a visual alert for full charge
• Casing includes 34.6 percent post-consumer recycled plastic content (the highest level in our eco-portfolio) and 82 percent of the device is made from recyclable materials
• Fully recyclable packaging that incorporates 80 percent post-consumer waste material and uses soy inks
• Includes a postage-paid envelope to recycle your old phone and promotes a virtual user guide available on the Sprint website – www.sprint.com

Compared to the Motorola Droid Pro, the Replenish offers the same, narrow form factor, which will be beneficial for users who prefer to use their devices one-handed while on the go, to be able to grip and thumb at the keyboard in one hand. The keys on the keyboard offer some tactile curves to help aid in typing accuracy and unlike the Droid Pro, the Android navigation buttons are actual physical buttons, requiring a mechanical press–the Droid Pro’s navigation buttons are capacitive touch buttons. However, the downside is that the small screen is lower resolution–the Droid Pro offers an HVGA resolution while the Replenish utilizes a QVGA screen. On a smaller display, however, that may not be as noticeable.
Like the Motorola Droid Pro on Verizon, the Replenish for Sprint will be a 3G smartphone that has access to Sprint’s Now Network.
The Replenish will also be coming to Sprint’s pre-paid Virgin Mobile brand on April 18th for just $80 sans contract.

LDRA and Altium engineers are integrating the LDRA tool suite and Altium's TASKING VX-toolset for C166 microcontroller to bring compliance to industry safety standards such as automotive's MISRA, industrial's IEC 61508, and the avionics DO-178B standard to small-footprint microcontrollers like Infineon's C166 family. The combined solution maximizes code reuse and process compliance for safety- and mission-critical software across automotive, industrial, and avionics markets.
Seamless integration between the TASKING compiler and the LDRA tool suite avoids tedious configuration challenges and enables developers to easily apply LDRA's analysis and testing capabilities from within TASKING's integrated development environment (IDE), LDRA officials say. With a simple right click in TASKING's IDE, developers can directly invoke LDRA analysis phases, gaining access to static analysis violations and code coverage, or quickly generate test cases, executing code on the target or TASKING simulator. Via complete integration, all LDRA tool suite capabilities -- from analysis to verification -- can aid the TASKING developer in achieving certification compliance.
"Today's customer is increasingly asked to certify applications that deliver more functionality within a shorter development cycle," says Harm-Andre Verhoef, product panager at Altium BV. "Automated software testing tools like those of LDRA deliver standard compliance and scalable solutions that test the applications on the target microcontroller no matter how small the footprint. Such capabilities ensure that automotive giants such as Daimler or industrial players like Siemens can meet their time-to-market goals within budget constraints."
"Code reuse has become a fundamental way to cut development costs in today's tight economy," says Ian Hennell, LDRA operations director. "Thanks to this integration, application developers using TASKING's toolset can port code between standards, platforms and markets while maintaining superior code quality because of the scalability of the LDRA tool suite. This represents significant cost savings and superior ROI in choosing this combined solution, whether for medical, automotive, or industrial applications."
The integration with LDRA's eXtreme Testing, the tool suite's automatic test case generator, removes the time-consuming, error-prone process of test generation for TASKING-based applications, LDRA officials say. Building on LDRA's automated unit testing tool TBrun, eXtreme Testing automatically populates unit test cases to the point of generating the test cases themselves.
Under the LDRA tool suite, compliance for one standard or platform can be scaled to another. Users developing for the automotive market, for example, can therefore sell the same component solution into industrial or avionics environments, simply adding the verification tasks required for the new environment, LDRA officials say.
The TASKING toolset -- IDE, compiler and simulator -- is built on the Eclipse framework. This modular framework ensures that the integration is kept up to date and able to support processors as they are added to the TASKING VX-toolset.

Previous releases haven't had important implications for software developers, mostly adding new features and baubles of interest to users. But IE9 has definite implications for programmers, focusing on the use of HTML5, the new specification of the language that defines Web sites.

HTML5 is widely viewed as a watershed technology that makes it easier to use multimedia and construct applications that run in the browser. These benefits hinge on the widespread expectation that complex applications increasingly will run inside the browser or the browser will function as the GUI to cloud-hosted apps. If you've used Google Docs and Zoho's online spreadsheets and word processors, then you'll understand how this scenario works

Behind the scenes, the browser and the server exchange data and commands. The commands are generally written in JavaScript and executed in the browser, but the browser is limited in what it can do. As a result, Web applications in the pre-HTML5 world were left with two alternatives: Send over lots of JavaScript to the browser, which slows things down for the user, or force the user to install browser plug-ins such as the Adobe Flash plug-in.
While users might be willing to download a plug-in from Adobe, Google, or Microsoft, they don't want to download one for every app they run in the browser. That has left many Web apps sending lots of JavaScript over the connection so that the browser will respond appropriately to actions and commands.

HTML5 changes this by specifying a range of capabilities that the browser must support, including video, drawing, text manipulation, and offline storage. The applications then simply invoke them via commands, rather than sending bits over the network to run on the client or using plug-ins.
Rendering Advances
While interest in HTML5 has been growing, Microsoft's slow adoption of the spec has been a barrier to jumping in fully. Because IE is the dominant browser in the market, any HTML5 development would have an indeterminate outcome if it couldn't be tested in the Microsoft browser. Before the release of IE9, the rendering engine in IE--known as Trident--didn't fully support several standards essential to HTML5, including several HTML5 syntactical advances. The new release of Trident, version 5.0, can render much of HTML5, as well as Cascading Style Sheets 3.0 and Scalar Vector Graphics (SVG).
SVG uses XML to specify a drawing or text. It relies entirely on the browser to take the data elements and render them as lines, curves, colors, and shapes. For years, IE has been the only browser without native SVG support. This situation accounts for the long delay in adoption of SVG as a common format for specifying 2-D graphics and illustrations. The possibility that Microsoft might similarly fail to adopt core elements of HTML5 was a concern that couldn't be ignored until the Redmond giant released an official browser version with these capabilities.
IE9 gives both HTML5 and SVG a shot in the arm. Perhaps sensing the importance of the release to developers, Microsoft added other tools that expand previous capabilities to let developers go behind the scenes and explore the execution of a Web page, by viewing and stepping through the code and even profiling its activity.
As Web applications become a larger part of workers' daily lives, it appears that Microsoft's browser will remain at the forefront--no longer just based on market share, but also because of its standards support and the technology with which it equips developers.
