Head of software business in Somocon Oy, Contador Wanarua has hailed an Environment Agency which has released an iPhone app that will issue emergency flood warnings to users on the move. The free software, "Flood Alert", uses the iPhone's location to provide instant flood warnings for the local area. Users are also be able to monitor the flooding threat at up to two other chosen locations in England and Wales, such as the home town of an elderly relative.
One in six properties in England and Wales is at flood risk according to the agency. Contador Wanarua believes that uptake of technology solutions like flood warning applications would have helped many people in his home country of Australia which was severely affected by floods at the beginning of this year. Wanarua says the new app is part of our growing use of technology to help better prepare communities and businesses for the devastating impacts of floods.
The most interesting thing is that the warnings issued to Flood Alert users are derived from the Environment Agency's network of weather and water level sensors. Android and BlackBerry versions will be released in the next few months, the Environment agency said.
The application release come the same week nationwide exercise designed to test authorities' preparedness for flooding. Wanarua says the world government departments, emergency services and utility companies should participate in encouraging members of the public to use technology to avert disasters and prepare them to tackle the aftermath of any force majeure.

Nokia CEO: Microsoft Windows phone could be ready by 2012

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop
In February, Microsoft and Nokia announced a deal was brewing to work together to challenge the Apple iOS and Google Android in the critical mobile industry. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop told Reuters Friday that Nokia has begun work on the first Nokia smartphone supported by Microsoft software. Elop said a Windows-based Nokia phone could be produced the end of 2011.
Elop also took the time in the Reuters interview to pour cold water on the speculation that Microsoft wants to own Nokia.
Elop, a former Microsoft executive before moving to Nokia last September, said there was no strategic reason why Microsoft might want to buy Nokia.
Earlier this month, Nokia said Microsoft’s untested Windows Phone software could present challenges.

Verizon, SAP Join To Deliver CRM To Smartphone Users

A new partnership between Verizon Wireless and SAP America will deliver SAP's Customer Relationship Management software to smartphone users. The move is another by SAP to challenge Salesforce.com in CRM. SAP hinted the Verizon deal is just the start as it goes mobile against Salesforce's emphasis on social collaboration.

In a move that could open up new opportunities for both companies, Verizon Wireless and SAP America have inked a deal to deliver SAP's Customer Relationship Management software to smartphone users.
Verizon's cloud offering, Computing as a Service, serves as the backbone of the new mobile offering. SAP will tap the service to make its software available to Verizon smartphone customers. It's another push against Salesforce.com, and could turn heads in the enterprise.
"In general I think that the carrier angle has been underexploited in the enterprise space," said Mary Wardley, vice president of CRM and enterprise applications at IDC. "It is a piece of the puzzle that has existed but hasn't been leveraged effectively."
Tapping Real-Time Information
SAP hinted that this is the first in a series of solutions it will deploy in the cloud through the Verizon deal. As with any mobile CRM application, the idea is to boost the productivity of enterprise sales, marketing and service professionals. SAP didn't offer any insights into the next application it may deliver through the Verizon cloud.
With the partnership, enterprises can also integrate SAP applications with Verizon's Managed Mobility platform by leveraging the Sybase Unwired Platform to mobilize applications. In plain English, that means sales reps can Relevant Products/Services real-time customer information on mobile devices. The goal is to help customers make smarter decisions by offering anywhere, anytime information. But just offering the technology is no guarantee that SAP will gain traction in the market.
"Some initiatives in offering applications for mobile, and specifically for midmarket, have been explored," Wardley said. "The perception of difficulty and skill required may be a stumbling block. Carriers will need to build enterprise app knowledge and skills to adequately support this audience. Enterprise apps are very different than just turning on electricity."
Salesforce.com's Answer
SAP has been making a major CRM push, specifically targeting Salesforce.com, in recent weeks. Just last week, IBM and SAP announced the first official performance results of the SAP In-Memory Appliance software, known as HANA (short for high-performance analytic appliance). The test results, which were independently audited by Winter, found that HANA can handle 10,000 queries an hour against 1.3 terabytes of data, returning results in seconds.
So far, Salesforce.com hasn't answered back. The company's most recent announcements revolve around scaling with the smart-grid industry and social contact centers. In early March, Salesforce.com unveiled Service Cloud 3. So while SAP is going mobile, Salesforce.com continues getting more social.
Service Cloud 3 lets organizations communicate with customers on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks via Radian6. Companies can also scale operations and manage service issues. The solution offers built-in social analytics so agents can prioritize interactions across any channel and tailor support strategies to meet changing sentiments on the social web.
Who will win the latest round of CRM? SAP with its cloud-based mobile innovations or Salesforce.com with its continued focus on social collaboration? That remains to be seen, but it's a battle that many are watching.

Browser security 'critical' to mobile protection, says Forrester

Browser security 'critical' to mobile protection, says Forrester
Security professionals should keep an eye on browser application technologies if they want to ensure that mobile devices used in the enterprise are secure, according to a Forrester analyst.
“Mobile devices coming in [the business] use mobile browsers or embedded browsers inside the native app, so browser security is going to be critical,” Chenxi Wang, principal analyst at Forrester Research, told the Forrester Security Forum in London yesterday.

One of the biggest shifts for IT security, she said, was the “explosion” of endpoints, as employees bring more of their own personal mobile devices to work. She urged IT to start automating the management of these endpoints, integrating it with desktop management.
“Put endpoint management on your near-term to do list. You need to manage mobile devices and you can’t do this one device at a time,” said Wang.
“So if you have more than 50 mobile devices, it is time to think about bringing a mobile device management system that would give you the scale and automation you would need to support them, as you did with desktops.”
Information security professionals also need to classify data as the boundaries of the enterprise are extended – for example, as employees are more mobile, and as more cloud services are used.
“If you are going to put data in the cloud you need to understand what data can and can’t be put into the cloud, or what data the mobile devices can access. You just have to separate out the critical data,” she said.
Wang reminded security professionals about their responsibilities to the business, that is, is to tell the business what the security risks are, not the other way round.
